Our on-line hint system (UHSWeb) is designed to work with virtually all web browsers. However, we recommend version 4.0 or higher of Netscape, Internet Explorer, or Opera. (See the notes below if you are using Opera 3 or Netscape 3.) We highly recommend that you enable JavaScript and cookies in your browser. Our on-line hints will still work without these features, but they will load much more slowly.

Here are some instructions on how to enable cookies and/or JavaScript. Following these instructions will also affect how other web sites work with your browser, unless you change the settings back before visiting another site. If you do not feel comfortable editing your browser's settings, then do not do so.

About Cookies
UHSWeb uses cookies to help your browser remember which hints you have read when you load or reload a hint page and to display hints more quickly. UHSWeb cookies do not contain any personal information about you, and we do not save or store these cookies for any reason.

Netscape 4.x Users: Select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu. Select the "Advanced" item on the left side of the dialog box, and select either "Accept all cookies" or "Accept only cookies that get sent back to the originating server." (Either option works for UHSWeb, but other sites may want you to select "Accept all cookies.") You may also check "Warn me before accepting a cookie," but you'll receive a warning every time you view a new hint.

Internet Explorer 4.x Users: Select "Internet Options" from the "View" menu. Go to the "Advanced" tab and look for a "Cookies" option under "Security". Set this option to "Always accept cookies." (Or choose "Prompt before accepting cookies," but you'll receive a warning every time you view a new hint.)

Internet Explorer 5.x/6.x Users: Select "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu. Go to the "Security" tab and either set the security level for the Internet Zone to "Medium" (or lower). You can also create a "Custom Level" and set one of the "Cookies" options to "Enable." (Or set "Cookies" to "Prompt," but you'll receive a warning every time you view a new hint.)

Opera 3.6x Users: Select "Advanced" from the "Preferences" menu. Make sure that "Enable Cookies" is checked.

Opera 4.x Users: Select "Preferences" from the "File" menu, and then select the "Privacy" category. Look under "Cookies" and choose "Automatically accept all cookies." (You can also choose "Display received cookies," but you'll receive a prompt every time you view a new hint. Or, you may choose "Accept only cookies from selected servers" if you also click on the "Edit server filters" and make sure that "www.uhs-hints.com" is added to the "Accept from servers" list.)

About Javascript
JavaScript is used to reformat pages when you request additional hints. (Note that JavaScript and Java are completely unrelated. You do not need to enable Java to use JavaScript.) If you disable JavaScript, your browser will have to contact our server every time you ask for a new hint, instead of just once for each question.

Netscape 4.x Users: Select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu. Select the "Advanced" item on the left side of the dialog box, and make sure the "Enable JavaScript" check box is set.

Internet Explorer 4.x Users: Select "Internet Options" from the "View" menu. Go to the "Security" tab and either set the security level for the Internet Zone to "Medium" (or lower). You can also create a "Custom Level" and set "Active scripting" (look under "Scripting") to "Enable". (Or set "Active scripting" to "Prompt," but you'll receive a warning every time you view a new hint.)

Internet Explorer 5.x/6.x Users: See the instructions above for "Internet Explorer 4.x", but look under the "Tools" menu for "Internet Options".

Opera 3.6x Users: Select "Multimedia" from the "Preferences" menu. Look under "Enable Multimedia" and make sure that "Enable Scripting Languages" is checked.

Opera 4.x Users: Select "Preferences" from the "File" menu, and then select the "Plug-ins" category. Look under "Scripting" and make sure that "Enable scripting languages" is checked.

Opera 3 Notes
Opera 3 gives you the option to have the browser identify itself as Netscape Navigator 3 (a.k.a. Mozilla). There are subtle differences between how Opera 3 and Mozilla 3 handle certain things, and UHSWeb must know what browser you are actually using to work properly. If you get a blank page whenever you try to view hints (but not the menus) under UHSWeb, this is very likely because Opera is pretending to be Mozilla. Select "Advanced" from the "Preferences" menu and clear (uncheck) the box marked "Identify as Mozilla 3.0."

Netscape 3 Notes
Many versions of Netscape 3 have problems with the JavaScript code used in the UHSWeb hint pages. If you are using Netscape 3, you will need to disable JavaScript to view our hints properly. (We recommend that you enable it under all other browsers.)

To disable JavaScript, select "Network Preferences" from the "Options" menu of your browser. Go to the "Languages" tab and clear the check box next to "Enable JavaScript".
